"Don’s impact on the National Library of Medicine, on healthcare systems, and on the world of biomedical informatics and computational biology was profound. His legacy is strong. We are all beneficiaries of his vision, his life’s work and his dedication to constant improvement and service to others. This publication – the work of Don’s peers and colleagues – shows the breadth and depth of Don Lindberg’s influence on American medicine, medical communications, biomedical informatics, the health of the American people and to global health."

– From the foreword by Louis W. Sullivan, MD, President Emeritus, Morehouse School of Medicine; U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, 1989–1993

Presented in four sections with a Foreword by Louis Sullivan, MD, former Secretary of Health and Human Services, the book explains how Dr. Lindberg’s leadership, decisions, and actions impacted scientists, health professionals, organizations, and the public. Mary Lindberg served as a valued consultant to the project’s editors.

Section One. Biomedical and Health Informatics focuses on how Dr. Lindberg and the NLM inspired the growth and remarkable transformation of biomedical informatics during Lindberg’s career.

Section Two. Multiple Dimensions of Expanded Access to Health Information recounts how Dr. Lindberg moved NLM to provide free worldwide service to scientists, health professionals, and the public, his impact on scholarly communication, and effects on new roles for librarians.

Section Three. Don Lindberg’s Outreach Legacy presents notable examples of NLM outreach to improve access to health information among underserved and disadvantaged minority populations, including an initiative with Native Americans that greatly inspired Dr. Lindberg.

Section Four. Memoirs written by family members, life-long friends and colleagues provide insights into Dr. Lindberg’s life, character, and humanism.

About Studies in Health Technology and Informatics (HTI)

International health informatics is driven by developments in biomedical technologies and medical informatics research that are advancing in parallel and form one integrated world of information and communication media and result in massive amounts of health data. These components include genomics and precision medicine, machine learning, translational informatics, intelligent systems for clinicians and patients, mobile health applications, data-driven telecommunication and rehabilitative technology, sensors, intelligent home technology, EHR and patient-controlled data, and Internet of Things.

The Studies in Health Technology and Informatics book series was launched in 1990 and now comprises more than 280 volumes from all over the world that promote biomedical and health informatics research.

Contribute to HTI

We invite authors, editors and conference organizers to submit book proposals for publication of handbooks, monographs and high quality conference proceedings. We are now also accepting single manuscripts for publication in the HTI Open Access collection. For more information and to submit proposals, please contact Kairi Look.
